One month from now, most of you will be giving up on your New Years resolutions. Seriously- think about it: On January first, the world is your oyster.  You are going to lose weight, drink less, exercise more, organize your closet, learn Mandarin…whatever.  And then, all of a sudden it’s December fourth and you’re done.

How do you change that mindset?

Think of it like this: do athletes just show up at the field/arena/stadium and play? Or do they start training weeks earlier?

Yeah….weeks earlier.  So when the season starts they are warmed up and ready and have a game plan.

So think of December as your pre season to New Years Resolutions.

  1. What? Pick one resolution (I call them goals) Think about it- It’s better to succeed at one then fail at four.
  2. Why? Make sure you want to change or resolve for the correct reasons (do you want to lose weight because you want to feel better, or because you think you will attract a partner if you’re thinner?)
  3. Who? Find a buddy to talk to about your resolution, or an expert that will give you logical advice.  Think about Doctors, trainers and teachers that can help you succeed.
  4. Where? Figure out if you need a place to help your goal.  Gym? Dedicated writing area? I know people who fail at writing goals because they don’t have a place to write that makes them feel comfortable to be creative.
  5. How? This is the big one.  How are you going to accomplish your resolution? Here’s my one cent: Make a plan. Figure out what tools you need. Look to the internet for advice (this is the good thing about the net- the plethora of information available at your fingertips) Write out the steps and put them in your planner (you know my secret goal is to get all of you to use a planner)
  6. When? When things get tough, when things don’t go the exact way you want (your triceps are still wiggly) what will be your motivation to get to the next step?

You don’t have to resolve to do anything- but let’s face it: most of us do. So if you’re going to set up a goal for 2019, you might as well prepare yourself the best you can. You can’t just wake up on January first and know how you’re going to learn Mandarin. Make it that January first starts your new timeline.  January One is the day you do a duolingo that you have already registered for.

Prep work.  It’s a good thing. It can help you get to where you are going.

  1. Make a plan, says the planner. 😁 Why do the non-planners struggle so much with this concept? I mean, I plan, but I always maintain that plans can, and do evolve…lol.

    I don’t do resolutions. My first if the year is in September with back to school. 🙃

  2. And accept that there are some things beyond our control. For example: we are both on the keto diet but the weight is falling off my husband while mine has stayed the same number since the beginning of last month yet my clothes are fitting better. Should I give up? Reanalyze or accept that men can say the word “lose” and it happens. Truth: men do lose faster and I may have to step up my exercise once grading is in. Accept the facts and move on.

  3. I’m not a planner. At least not about lifestyle things for myself. I’ve planned enough for important things in life and worrying about resolutions seems silly at my current stage in life. The condo I live in put me in charge of their holiday party and because of my teaching experience I’m really good at planning. I just don’t like it. In fact I hate planning. I wish I weren’t so take charge and good at it… but I am. So… I’ve been so busy planning for Thanksgiving, then Chanukah, now the holiday party, then it’s Christmas, I’m all planned out.
    My GOALS for 2019 ? I’ve started making doctor appointments and I’ll get myself taken care of tobe my healthiest self. That’s my plan. Done.
    As a mom. Grandma, teacher, former wife, I have planned for others but don’t usually plan for myself . So my goal was to finally do that in 2018.. Don’t laugh but before the end of 2018 I set up a payment plan to pay for everything for when I pass away .yep. I picked out my forever home – plot, service everything. My kids won’t have to worry about a thing. Believe it or not, it’s about 18 to 20 grand to bury a loved one. So instead of getting a new car. I set up everything for when I meet my maker. Now that’s planning!. Necessary planning for a single woman living alone. I didn’t enjoy it, but I planned it dOwn to having them play the song “Dancing in the moonlight” after the rabbi says prayers so my family will be dancing and smiling and not crying. They’ll be worry free and celebrate my life rather than stressed. (Remember Jews are buried immediately and there’s no time to plan). My parents had everything done so all we had to do was show up and our grief was enough to deal with. I turn 70 in 2019. So… you talk about planning? I planned for the unthinkable. A few years ago My son had to deal with planning for my ex husband when he died. I don’t want my kids to go through that shock and trauma with me. So I have now planned and paid for all that. Just like I planned and prepaid for my grandkids’ college. Some things we MUST plan for. But normally planning for myself? Nope. I’ll let The the good times role. I only plan for the important stuff and let the day to day stuff just happen. I no longer make New Years resolutions. They are always the same anyway.
    I feel like I have now planned for all the major things in my life. No more planning necessary now… done done done… whatever happens now I’m ready.

      1. I lost my best friend last year from cancer. I watched her family scramble and deal with all of that. A few years back when my son’s father passed unexpectedly he was left dealing with burial responsibilities and I helped him and was blown away with everything it involved and the exorbitant prices. All difficult when one is grieving. So my sister and I decided to do this before the year ended. We each put down a deposit on the plot and all that involves and the service and then did a five year payment plan. I figure it will all be set, paid for when the time comes and my children won’t have to worry about anything. My folks did that. Best thing they could have done. I took cemetery selfies and sent them to my kids. Made the experience a positive one and decided if I had to plan for something this was the most important thing to get out of the way. I highly recommend doing it.

      1. Absolutely! It will be all set and hopefully I won’t need to use those arrangements for a long time. lol But I’m right near a lovely gazebo and a lake and instead of a traditional stone at the same cost I’m having a marble bench with my info on it that they can sit on should they like to talk to me. Then they can leave the traditional stones on it when they leave. I thought if every detail. Even being buried in my favorite jeans . ✌️

  4. Perfect advice. Don’t wait till the new year — start your resolution today! Give up soda during the week instead of forever. Park further away from work so you get more exercise. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. That only leads to self defeat and depression. One day at a time!

  5. I was driving back from Maine and listening to the podcast “Happier with Gretchen Rubin” It was old episode because I like to listen from episode one. They were talking about New Years resolutions and they said many people fail because they choose “outcome based” resolutions when we can’t control the outcome. We can only control our behavior. One of my resolutions was to run a half-marathon but what if I injure myself or get bronchitis and can’t run it. So my resolution should be that I am going to get back into fitness. I can control that. The Half-marathon may still happen.

    Anyway, your blog post made me think of that 🙂

  6. I am feeling like I’m just along for the ride in the middle of the canoe on a flooded river . I can’t even figure out a resolution or goal for next year. I guess that is my first step. My kids are sick and the plumber is here to take all of our money, so that’s my life today. But I have a marathon this weekend to look forward to. Great post!

  7. I don’t make resolutions but I do make a set of “vision cards” each year in December. I take 4 or 5 “areas” like health, home, travel, business, relationships and then I make a 5 x 8 card with pictures and words that bring those areas into focus for me. I keep the finished cards in my planner and every few months I review them to see if I have progressed on my goals. Sometimes one area has had more action than others so then I readjust. It takes away the failure factor if I can see some kind of progress, even just a little.

  8. I wait until after Epiphany (Jan 6th) to “begin” the new year. I can recommend Ryder Carroll’s “The Bullet Journal Method”. Not just how to create a Bullet Journal but why and how it will help you set and reach goals. I read a copy from the library but I know Santa will be bringing me my own copy!
